A Viennese Waltz in Startup Land

The Viennese Waltz is a rotary dance where one quickly turns to their leader’s right or left. Interspersed with non-rotating change steps to switch between direction of rotation.

This weekend I found myself doing a waltz of my own, but instead to the sound of music it was to the flow of ideas. I drifted from one group of entrepreneurs to another and within these groups, individuals were rotating from one idea to another. Concepts were mapped out, platforms half-built and business models changed by the hour. Just as a true Viennese Waltz consists only of turns and change steps, a startup environment can be just as intimate, fast paced. Instead of clutching the hand of your partner, you’re clutching to the idea and the spirit of your team.

I’d like to thank the team behind Startup Live Vienna for inviting me to mentor on the ‘art of communicating’. It was great to roll up my sleeves and brainstorm with such amazing minds. To learn more about this event, please have a read of Vincent Jong’s nice wrap up
